Some hotels are celebrated for their luxury, others for their history—but an extraordinary few are famous for something far more intriguing! The Stanley Hotel in Colorado isn't just a place to rest; it's a legendary destination wrapped in mystery, inspiration, and captivating ghost stories.

A Hotel That Inspired Horror

Back in 1974, the iconic writer Stephen King, seeking inspiration, spent a night in Room 217 of The Stanley Hotel. That night, he had a spine-chilling nightmare of his young son sprinting through the eerie corridors, filled with fear. By morning, he had birthed the idea for "The Shining," one of the most celebrated horror novels of all time!

Since then, The Stanley has wholeheartedly embraced its spooky allure, offering thrilling ghost tours, themed events, and even a room dedicated to King himself.

The Haunted History

Built in 1909 by the inventive Freelan Oscar Stanley (famous for the Stanley Steamer), the hotel was designed as a luxurious mountain retreat. Yet over the years, guests and staff have encountered mysterious paranormal events:

👻 Room 217 – The very room where Stephen King stayed, where guests report sightings of ghostly housekeepers folding laundry or mysteriously moving objects.

🎶 The Grand Ballroom – Where ethereal piano music echoes late at night, even when the room is empty.

🚪 Room 428 – Known for the shadowy cowboy apparition that appears at the foot of the bed.

Even the most sceptical visitors have admitted to feeling "watched" in the hallways, and paranormal investigators have captured unexplained sounds, sudden temperature drops, and ghostly whispers.

What It’s Like to Stay There

If you dare to spend a night, you'll discover that the Stanley is not a dilapidated haunted house—it's a fully operational luxury hotel with elegant rooms, breathtaking mountain views, and exquisite dining.

🛌 Staying in a haunted room? You can request one, but prepare for flickering lights and mysterious noises!

🎭 Ghost tours & events – The hotel offers guided tours at night, leading guests through its most haunted locations.

📽 The Shining connections – Although Kubrick’s film wasn’t filmed here, the hotel plays "The Shining" on a continuous loop in the rooms.
